Long neglected by government and looked down upon by society, Badjaos are now joining government in helping protect the country’s waters.
According to Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, the first batch of Badjaos have signed up as auxiliaries under the “Bantay Laut” program in Davao City.
They will be tasked with monitoring illegal fishing activities in the seas fronting their communities and also gather garbage floating in the waters.
As “Bantay Laut” auxiliaries, the Badjao fishermen were given fiberglass motorized fishing boats.
